The Population Research Centre (PRC) of ISEC is organizing a two-day International Conference on Global Issues of Population, Development and Environment on October 27-28, 2014, at ISEC, Nagarabhavi, Bangalore. The seminar will focus on themes related to Population growth, economic and infrastructure development and consequences thereof on Environment, as felt across the world in the 21st century.

About the PRC:

The Population Research Centre (PRC) is an interdisciplinary community of scholars established in 1972. The Centre is engaged in research and training in population dynamics. The major objectives of the Centre are to conduct and promote sponsored and independent research in population studies and to assist the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, with policy inputs and feedback on population and health issues. The main financial support for the Centre comes from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), New Delhi. The PRC is actively engaged mainly in research relating to contemporary issues of demography and health in India on one hand and issues of gender, development versus environment on the other.

Aims and Objectives of the Seminar:

  • to examine the dynamics of population growth and its impact on environment across the continents of the world;

  • to look at the nexus between population, poverty, development and environment with a view to assessing various environmental and other impacts of industrialization, urbanization and infrastructure development;

  • to examine demographic change and its adverse impact on environment;

  • to trace the level of environmental degradation as seen through the physical characteristics of a region;

  • and to formulate policy prescriptions and recommendations to take appropriate measures to mitigate environmental decay for sustainable development and to conserve environment for the generations to come.

Scope and Outline of the Seminar:

In the present era of Globalization, Privatization and Liberalization (LPG), the inter-relationship of population, development and environment (PDE), has been drawing greater attention of the researchers, academicians and environmental scientists. However, over the years, the proximate causes, such as population growth, poverty and density, and ultimate factors, such as development imperatives like urbanization, migration, industrialization, technological change and rapid economic growth etc., have been causing significant environmental damage. And it has been found that they differ from region to region, based on the physical characteristics of a region such as their index of socio-economic development, population size and its composition. In this context, the proposed seminar Global Issues of Population, Development and Environment has selected the following seven sub-themes to cover the complex issues of population, development and environment. This seminar is an attempt to bring together international scholars from cognate areas on a single platform to deliberate on the issues cited earlier. It is hoped that the conclusions of the seminar will directly help evolve policies and programmes for environmental protection with sustainable development.

Sub-Themes:

  • Population Dynamics, Poverty and Environmental Nexus

  • Economic Growth, Industrialization and Environmental Damage

  • Energy Consumption, Waste Generation and Environmental Pollution

  • Demographic Change and the Environment (Income Generation, Middle Class Population and its Effects on Environment)

  • Development versus Environment (Landscape Change, Ecosystem Imbalance and Environment)

  • Issues of Urbanization, Migration and Governance

  • Environmental Policies and  Programmes
